What is the Ideal Season to Have Your Siding Replaced?

sarah • July 21, 2021

Do you need new siding on your home? Most homeowners know that a roof replacement can be done virtually any time of the year, but they are unsure about when a siding replacement is recommended. Temperature does have an effect on the success of your siding replacement, especially if you choose certain types of siding. If you are trying to plan a siding replacement, here is what you need to know about seasonality and the success of your project.

Siding and Cold Temps

The panels on vinyl siding tend to start to contract at around 50 degrees. When a panel contracts, it can be nailed too tightly to a home and cause a lot of damage when the weather warms and the panels expand. Cold air can also make vinyl more brittle, causing them to crack or break apart during the installation process. If a panel cracks or breaks, your contractor will need to replace it, adding both time and cost to your project.

Siding and Hot Temps

If you are having vinyl siding put on your house, you need to understand how it is affected by the sun. Vinyl is primarily made up of plastic. When plastic is exposed to high heat, it can stretch, expand, or even melt. If your contractor attempts to install your panels when they are in this condition, they will likely not fit property throughout the rest of the year.

Siding and Moisture

While spring may seem like an obvious choice for when to install siding due to the mild temps, it can actually cause problems due to the increased moisture. If your contractor is in the middle of your siding project and a big rainstorm hits, the exposed walls could start to form mold. Your contractor may need to delay your project for days or even weeks if this happens, making the project last longer and cost more.

So When is the Ideal Season?

In most cases, fall is the ideal season in which to install vinyl siding for a number of reasons. Siding material tends to go on sale during the fall as suppliers and contractors are trying to make room for new winter inventory. Contractors also tend to be less busy in the fall as their other projects start to dwindle. This means they will have more time for your siding project and can get it done in less time. The moderate temperatures and lack of heavy rainfall also make fall a great time to get a siding project done without the risk of weather delays. Having your siding project done in the fall also means you’ll get to experience the benefits of added insulation when the cold weather hits! Depending on the actual weather that occurs in any season, you can usually get a siding project done throughout the year. However, the ideal time is usually fall—which is quickly approaching!
